How does laser treatment work for hair removal?

Laser hair removal is a fast and effective method of removing unwanted hair. At BodyLaser Clinic our high quality lasers produce very short pulses of concentrated laser light. Each laser pulse lasts only a few milliseconds. Without damaging the surrounding skin, the laser light passes down to the hair follicle where it is absorbed by the hair. Each laser pulse heats a large number of hair follicles and ultimately destroys their potential for hair growth. Hair may sometimes be ejected during the laser treatment but usually the dead hair is shed over the following week.

Can ingrown hair be treated?

Ingrown hair generally occurs on the face and neck but it can be a problem in other body areas too. We can safely treat ingrowing hair on all skin types and all body areas.

Is it permanent hair removal?

Laser hair removal has been studied for the past 15 years. Treatment with high quality laser and IPL devices have certainly been shown to give results that last many years provided the operators used appropriate treatment settings. It is possible these results will be shown to be permanent.

Are there side effects with laser treatment?

Side effects are rare. Immediately after treatment the skin may appear slightly red around the hair follicles but this usually disappears quickly. You can return to your normal activities right away.

What other hair removal options are there?

Wax (waxing) and hair removal cream can be used for the temporary removal of body hair. Shaving, plucking, and threading also give temporary results. Only laser hair removal and electrolysis treatments give long lasting results. With Electrolysis treatment an electric current is applied with a fine needle-shaped electrode, or metal probe into each hair follicle to destroy the root. Electrolysis is therefore a slow process which is suitable only for small areas of treatment. By delivering laser energy to hundreds of hair follicles at a time, our lasers effectively treat an area in just seconds which might otherwise take an hour with Electrolysis.
